Say what you want about Kanye West the human (and I’ll probably agree with you), but musically I continued to be surprised and excited by the man… I even loved the vast majority of his alleged disappointment “808s & Heartbreak.” And while I do not look forward to the possibility of hearing him accept awards or go on talk shows as the result of his upcoming album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” so far I’m all about what it has to offer. Its single “Runaway” is remarkably catchy and with clever (and self-deprecating!) lyrics to boot, and has been a staple on my iPod for the past few weeks. And now he throws a wild, 35 minute art film of a video at us, which was released online this weekend. Said to be inspired by everything from Purple Rain to The Wall to Thriller to Picasso to Matisse to Stanley Kubrick to Federico Fellini, it’s expectedly messy and definitely a bit much… But you have to hand it to Kanye for continuing to be a totally distinctive artistic presence in the very mainstream. And, like Lady Gaga as of late, treating the music video as the kind of medium it was circa Michael Jackson and Madonna’s heydays: A big one.
