FilmDistrict has picked up Drive, the Ryan Gosling/Carey Mulligan action film currently shooting in Los Angeles with director Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising, Bronson), which is selling at the American Film Market.
Gosling plays a Hollywood stuntman and freelance getaway driver who gets embroiled in a bank robbery gone awry. Mulligan is along for the ride as Gosling’s passenger. The elements sound promising for a wide demographic when FilmDistrict releases the picture in fall 2011. The screenplay is by Hossein Amini (Jude, The Four Feathers, Killshot), adapting the James Sallis novel. Gosling boasts female appeal, while Mulligan, Mad Men star Christina Hendricks and plenty of car chases should lure males.
The film also stars Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston.
“DRIVE is a gripping crime-drama with roles that allow our incredible cast to take on new challenges which is very exciting to watch,” says producer Marc Platt. “Gigi Pritzker and Michel Litvak and their teams have brought outstanding creative instincts to the process which, coupled with Nic Refn’s innate talent, have helped to make this a captivating film on every level.”
“Refn, Amini and the cast are creating a taut, captivating thriller, full of reversals, suspense and fascinating characters,” says Bob Berney, President, Theatrical Distribution, FilmDistrict. “We are very excited to bring DRIVE to the US audiences.”
