Boardwalk Empire's Episode Five, Only for Nights in Ballygran

Thompson on Hollywood

I’m continuing to enjoy the many pleasures of Boardwalk Empire, especially Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt and Kelly Macdonald, wily performers all. During one of the best episodes so far, Episode Five, “Only for Nights in Ballygran,” set on Atlantic City on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day 1920, Nucky Thompson (Buscemi) throws his annual Order of Celts party.

In the episode we hear the Irish ballad “Carrickfergus” several times: it’s one of my favorite Van Morrison songs, below. And I predict that young actress Emily Meade, who plays an unlucky prostitute who tugs Pitt’s heart, will land more juicy roles going forward. HBO provides how-they-did-it behind-the-scenes material here.
