Paradigm Consulting’s Peter Broderick and Cinematech’s Scott Kirsner (Fans, Friends & Followers) are mounting some indie distribution workshops to help filmmakers and producers navigate the crazily shifting indie market in NYU, New York (November 13) and UCLA, Los Angeles (November 20). I’ll be helping out on one of their expert-led lunch discussions for filmmakers and producers on such topics as working with media/bloggers, understanding the mechanics of VOD deals, working with foreign sales agents, etc.
Last year’s USC Distribution University drew more than 200 people and generated this story from the NYT’s Manohla Dargis. Here is a podcast of Broderick offering some examples of films that have pioneered innovative distribution strategies, from 2009’s Distribution U: podcast below.
“It’s for indie producers and filmmakers who believe that the business is changing but also believe that there actually will be a way to make a living making great work — despite all the doomsaying — if you’re willing to adapt. In New York, indie distrib Richard Abramowitz of Abramorama, who worked on this year’s release of Exit Through the Gift Shop will participate. In LA, singer-songwriter Jill Sobule will provide a case study of how she rebooted her career in a post-record label environment, in part by raising $90,000 for her latest album from her fans.
