– Genre-mixing on well-known tales is the new thing: take the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (in which Tom Hardy may play the vampire lead), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, The Tempest, Snow White and the Huntsman, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Joe Wright’s The Little Mermaid, and so on. Thus it comes as no surprise that Production Weekly (and ThePlaylist) are announcing Henry5, a sci-fi thriller version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V. Among the actors attached are Michael Caine, Ray Winstone, Gerard Depardieu, Derek Jacobi and Vinnie Jones. The project comes from Arclight’s production division Darclight Films and will be directed by Michael Anderson, who also co-wrote the script adaptation with Andrew Hislop and Steve Wilkinson (who is producing alongside Nigel Wooll). ThePlayist has more.
– The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford was a decidedly serious film, so the re-teaming of Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik for a comedy-crime flick Cogan’s Trade is intriguing. Central character Jackie Cogan is a pro enforcer looking into a high stakes poker game heist occurring under the noses of the mob. Dominik is also reportedly looking to bring Assassination actors Sam Rockwell and Casey Affleck into this reunion project. Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem’s names have also been thrown in the mix.
– Wong Kar Wai’s latest as writer-director is filming in China with Zhang Ziyi and Tony Leung (whose on-screen chemistry scored in Wong’s 2046 in 2004 and Zhang Yimou’s Hero in 2002, ). The Grandmasters combines love and martial arts in this story, which is summed up as: “In martial arts there is no right or wrong, only the last man standing.” The martial arts are choreographed by the great action maestro Yuen Woo-Ping, but few other details are known.
