indieWIRE is in good hands.
While I’m still adjusting to the idea that I’ve left the company I co-founded nearly fifteen years ago, I’m excited to achieve a longtime goal of handing off indieWIRE to a talented group of folks that will support and nurture it now that I’ve left the role of Editor-in-Chief. The true accomplishment is the fact that it will now not only survive, but thrive. That’s a huge achievement given the number of moments iW faced tough times over the years. With solid leadership from SnagFilms, and a strong editorial and advertising team at indieWIRE that will continue to grow, the company is in exceptional shape.
Even as I move to The Film Society of Lincoln Center, I’m thrilled that I’ll still have a voice via this six year old blog. It’s a dramatic and exciting moment for FSLC and I’m honored to be joining the group. Meanwhile, I’ll keep blogging here, writing about movies, watching the industry, analyzing awards season, documenting my travels and tracking some of my work uptown at Lincoln Center.
Congrats to Brian Brooks on being named Acting Editor-in-Chief, he stepped in swiftly over the past month to expand his role managing the day to day operations and also laying the foundation for the future. While Brian has been on staff at indieWIRE for more than ten years, he got involved early on after we started the site, filing news and covering fests from the West Coast. Brian (pictured left with me at indieWIRE 14th anniversary party in July) and new indieWIRE Editor-at-Large Anne Thompson, are a talented duo with tons of experience and deep relationships among filmmakers and the industry in the U.S. and internationally. They are working closely together to guide indieWIRE as CEO Rick Allen rounds out the team in preparation for naming a new permanent leader. Brian and Anne work with a talented group that includes Peter Knegt in Toronto, Sophia Savage in Los Angeles, Nigel Smith and Bryce Renninger in New York, as well as lead critic Eric Kohn and a worldwide team of contributors and freelancers. Complementing the editorial group is indieWIRE’s powerful one-two punch of James Israel and Jason Gonzalez on the advertising side. I’m grateful to the entire iW group (as well as the folks at SnagFilms) for their support and am excited to watch this team take the reigns.
While the Hollywood trade papers are twisting and turning today, trying to come up with plans for their own futures, indieWIRE is building on its core, expanding organically and responding to the community it serves and is a key part of.
