Producers Guild To Honor Scott Rudin with David O. Selznick Achievement Award

Thompson on Hollywood

Love him or hate him, but producer Scott Rudin is fighting the good fight for good movies–at a time when very few have the will or power to win that battle–and thus the 2011 Producers Guild of America’s David O. Selznick achievement award for motion pictures is well-deserved.

Who else kills to acquire the best books–even when they are unmakable, from Jonathan Franzen to Michael Chabon–hires the best directors, from David Hare and David Fincher to Noah Baumbach, Wes Anderson and newcomer Lena Dunham, recognizes the global pull of a franchise like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and has not one but two possible Oscar contenders in the race this year? He won his first Oscar for the Coens’ No Country for Old Men and could win his second for the Coens’ True Grit, or Fincher’s The Social Network. I’m not kidding when I say that in a film industry where quality dramas are almost impossible to make, Rudin is the producer standing between Hollywood and the abyss.

The PGA will present the Selznick award to Rudin at their 22nd annual ceremony on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Past winners include Stanley Kramer, Saul Zaentz, Clint Eastwood, Billy Wilder, Robert Evans, Brian Grazer, Jerry Bruckheimer, Roger Corman, Laura Ziskin, Kathleen Kennedy & Frank Marshall, and Pixar’s John Lasseter, last year. Said PGA Co-Presidents Hawk Koch and Mark Gordon:

“Scott Rudin’s body of work speaks for itself.  He has impressively set a high bar for filmmaking and the Guild is proud to honor him with the Selznick Award this year.”

Scott also produced my favorite movie so far of 2010, GREENBERG. He’s had a remarkable year.
