reRuns & Con Artists

reRuns & Con Artists

I have sadly not yet had the opportunity to check out the reRun Gastropub Theater in Brooklyn, a new bright spot on the independent film landscape. It’s time to remedy that. And I plan to do so this weekend when I go see Con Artist which opens this friday at reRun. The documentary explores the “artist” Mark Kostabi – notable for his many paintings, the cover art for Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion, and hiring other people to do his paintings for him – while asking the audience to consider the blurred line between art and celebrity. It’s a smart film. It’s also funny. We are talking about a man who launched a career as a protegé of Warhol but now has a public access game show that involves dollar bills literally being dropped into the crowd. After a long festival life that involved such great ones as Tribeca, Hamptons, Starz Denver, Sarasota and Rome, I’m excited that the film is getting it’s due at one of the coolest new theaters in town.
