Last week I responded to the rumor of a new “Star Wars” trilogy with a collection of videos and images that bring the franchise’s universe to modern Earth. So seeing the headline on JoBlo.com “Cool Videos: TIE Fighters attack NYC!” had me thinking this was going to be more of the same. A video like “Death Star over San Francisco” but set in the Big Apple. But it’s not another crafty fan-made short. It’s an unofficial ad for an official “Star Wars” augmented reality video game for the iPhone. Probably the best thing to happen to iPhone-owning “Star Wars” geeks since the app that simulates lightsaber noises.
The game is called “Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner,” and it uses the iPhone’s camera to supply the background of the game play. So, as the test footage shows us, we can pretend TIE Fighters are invading New York City, and we must shoot them down from the Millennium Falcon, apparently sitting on a rooftop or balcony. Of course, if you don’t live in New York you have to make do with whatever environment you have at your disposal. I think there are other simulations, too, including one modeled after the Battle of Hoth. That should be great once the snow starts falling this winter.
And while rummaging around YouTube this morning for other footage of the game, I came upon these videos that would have been appropriate if included in last week’s post. A TIE Fighter flies across Astoria, Queens:
