– Stay calm, Terrence Malick fans. The LAT says there’s truth to the hype. They provide a sneak peak at the film’s trailer (which Fox Searchlight is attaching to Black Swan Friday) and debuted several stills. The trailer suggests a “mystical, rich and satisfying film…a big-canvas movie in the best sense, one with both cosmic significance and intimate drama,” writes Steven Zeitchik. The shots in the trailer include “visual poetry — shots of vast landscapes and religious half-light and spinning planets,” and declares a resulting “sense of excitement about what Malick has just shown you and a sense of curiosity about what lies behind it.”
[One TOH source said that Brad Pitt gives an awards-worthy performance, along with Jessica Chastain as his wife; Sean Penn appears in the film’s book-ends. Technically gorgeous–shot by Emmanuel Lubezki– the film is an experimental, non-conventional narrative:
“It’s a mystical exploration of the meaning of life, a journey in which a microcosm of a family mirrors the world; the differences between man and woman, husband and wife, are mirrored against nature and grace. It will change the language of movies. It’s a real event. People will say, ‘what the fuck is this?’”]
The trailer is arriving shortly…
– Kate Winslet indirectly confirms that Sam Mendes is likely to direct the next Bond film late next year in London – “It’s such a massive commitment for him and it’s not fair for him to commute backwards and forwards to New York from London. It would be impossible. The children will be there with me,” Winslet said to the Daily Mail. The former partners and amicable parents will likely work again as actress-director (a la Revolutionary Road) – ‘We’re really good friends and have very good respect for each other. I can see [us working together again], but you’d have to ask Sam what he thinks.” Winslet confirmed it would not, however, be as a Bond girl. Before Bond bombards their lives, Mendes will direct Richard III at the UK’s Old Vic theatre and Winslet – just wrapping her nine days of shooting on Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion – is on board for Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage (based on the dark comedy play by Yasmina Reza) with Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly, which is set to shoot early 2011.
– Johnny Depp – perhaps the male cover model most likely to sell magazines – promotes his latest, The Tourist, in Vanity Fair (Angelina Jolie does Vogue). In Patti Smith’s interview he discusses Jolie’s “perverse” sense of humor, Captain Jack Sparrow (brace yourself for Pirates 5 and 6) and his other famous roles, while he waxes adoration for his partner’s (Heartbreaker‘s Vanessa Paradis) neck and last name (which he has no interest of changing) – below:
