Watch: Trailer For 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'

Shiver me timbers! It’s the first trailer for “Pirates Of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides“! And that’s about as fake enthused as we’re going to get about this now dead franchise which inexplicably continues to rake in mad cash.

The first trailer has arrived online and it’s pretty much a certainty it will be attached to “Tron: Legacy” opening this weekend. The film stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Stephen Graham, Richard Griffiths, Keith Richards, Judi Dench, Sam Clafin and Astrid Berges-Frisby and this time around Captain Jack Sparrow is chasing the Fountain Of Youth. But we’re sure the actual film will be way more needlessly convoluted than that.

The film arrives on May 20, 2011 in 3D so you may want to keep your sick bag handy. US and UK trailers after the jump.

No one here seems to be aware that this installment has been adapted, somehow, from the wonderful 1987 fantasy novel On Stranger Tides, by one of the giants of the field, Tim Powers. How they managed to maul and contort the original book to fit the PotC world I cannot imagine. But even if you’re not looking forward to the movie (and I’m not), you should definitely read the original.

I think that the success of the original Pirates film was based on the fact that it was funny. It was a comedy. The two sequels ditched the comedy for a more straight action film. Then people complained that the sequels were not as good for some reason. Well, that’s the reason. The first movie was really funny and the sequels were not.

This trailer does NOT look funny. I guess they still don’t get it.

This actually looks pretty promising. I loved the first film, but hated the second one and never even bothered with the third. This trailer at least looks better than the Green Lantern, Thor, and Cowboys and Aliens.

I don’t know, it looks surprising back on track to me. Really liked the first one. Hated the two sequels. This looks good. Love Mr. Lovejoy himself, Ian McShane.

Same ‘ol shit.

It certainly looks sumptuous but yes, it seems more like Pirates 2 & 3 (ugh) than 1.
