Elijah Wood Confirmed to Star in The Hobbit, Treasure Island

Thompson on Hollywood

Elijah Wood is on the comeback trail. The Lord of the Rings star has signed to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s prequel of The Hobbit, even though it takes place some 60 years ahead of The Fellowship of the Ring. (Spoiler alert: he’s part of a narrative framing device.) The two-parter will be filmed back to back in two parts in New Zealand. Warner Bros. is partnering with MGM.

Wood will also star as Ben Gunn opposite Eddie Izzard in Sky TV’s two-part four-hour mini-series of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island, adapted by Stewart Harcourt, produced by Alan Moloney and directed by Steve Barron.

Up next for Wood is summer FX series Wilfred; he’s also returning to voice George Miller’s Happy Feet 2 (November 18) and will voice Disney XD’s Tron: Uprising (2012). Sundance attendees can see him in Oscilloscope chief and ex-Beastie Boy Adam Yauch’s short Fight for your Right Revisited, also starring John C. Reilly and Seth Rogen.
