Thompson on Hollywood

Los Angeles foreign film fans have a chance to see the five Golden Globe foreign nominees at the American Cinematheque: including Biutiful (Mexico, Spain), The Concert (France), The Edge (Russia), I Am Love (Italy) and In A Better World (Denmark).

Many of the foreign Oscar submissions are showing at the Palm Springs International Film Festival starting this weekend, which has unaccountably not programmed its panel of foreign filmmakers this year–taking them on retreat instead. (What about the public?) One of the hottest tickets in L.A. is the February pre-Oscar Show interview conducted by the head of the Academy’s foreign branch, Mark Johnson, with the five directors of the foreign Oscar nominees, which is only open to active foreign Oscar voters.

February’s Santa Barbara Film Festival, which announced its line-up Thursday, also features a big selection of foreign fare.
