Magnolia Pictures and Participant Media have jointly picked up U.S. rights to Andrew Rossi’s “Page One A Year Inside The New York Times, which had its world premiere Sunday night at the Sundance Film Festival. Magnolia will release the film theatrically later this year.
Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn negotiated the pact with Submarine’s Josh Braun, and Diane Weyermann, Jeff Ivers and Ricky Strauss for Participant Media. Victoria Cook provided legal services.
According to a company release, Participant will “utilize its extensive social action network to create a social action and advocacy campaign that will explore the challenges of balancing journalistic ethics and first amendment rights in an age where the lines between traditional journalism and online infotainment are becoming increasingly blurred and the desire for immediacy often overshadows the need for accuracy.”
“Page One” unfolds over the course of 2010, one of the most tumultuous years for print journalism since the invention of the printing press, with online media continuing to reinvent the rules and some of the oldest print newspaper institutions in the country forced to close or drastically reduce their operations. Along the course of the year, director Rossi was given unprecedented access to the editorial process at the New York Times. Featuring such notable journalists and editors as David Carr, Bill Keller, Bruce Headlam, Tim Arango and Brian Stelter, the film examines the role of the fabled institution in today’s rapidly changing media landscape, as well as the hard work and difficult decisions that go into reporting the news.
