Meet the 2011 Sundance Filmmakers | “Lord Byron,” “Salesman” & “Last Mountain”

Meet the 2011 Sundance Filmmakers | "Lord Byron," "Salesman" & "Last Mountain"

With the 2011 Sundance Film Festival opening Thursday, indieWIRE’s preview profiles of filmmakers screening in the event’s U.S. and World competitions and NEXT section is in its final stretch. Joining the roster of over 50 filmmaker interviews today are Zack Godshall’s “Lord Byron” (NEXT), Sebastien Pilote’s “The Salesman” (World Cinematic Dramatic Competition) and Bill Haney’s “The Last Mountain” (U.S. Documentary Competition).

Soon after the Sundance Film Festival unveiled its 2011 lineup, indieWIRE invited directors with films in the Sundance U.S. Dramatic & Documentary Competitions, as well as the World Dramatic & Documentary Competitions and NEXT section, to submit responses in their own words about their films. indieWIRE has been the place to get to know the Sundance filmmakers ahead of the festival for more than a half-dozen years.

Over 50 in the four sections provided their responses and indieWIRE has been rolling them out daily through the beginning of the festival later this week.

A snapshot of Tuesday’s new featured interviews:

Zack Godshall’s “Lord Byron” (NEXT), a deadpan Greek tragedy set on the Gulf shores, features a cast of bizarre, comedic characters pursuing uncommon dreams and missions. The film had an unusual shooting schedule as Godshall revealed to indieWIRE. “We made the film in South Louisiana with a crew of three and a cast of unknowns based on a 15-page outline,” he said. “With the exception of two days in the middle of the swamp, we never worked for more than 6 hours a day, and never more than 4 days per week. This loose schedule freed us up to get sleep and to work with people when they were available.”

Over in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition is Sebastien Pilote’s first feature “The Salesman,” which follows a silver-tongued car salesman who lives in the working-class town of Lac Saint-Jean, Quebec. Pilote told indieWIRE how the film’s plot actually reflected the reality in which they were shooting. “Everything in the movie about the factory, the closures, etc., was echoed in the city where we were shooting,” he said. “The city was experiencing the same events as the ones depicted in the film. Some days it was so unbelievable and sad to see how fiction was mirroring reality.”

Last is Bill Haney’s “The Last Mountain” (U.S. Documentary Competition), which focuses on the devastating effects of mountaintop coal removal in West Virginia’s Coal River Valley. As Haney told indieWIRE the documentary has many roots. “The idea for this film has many parents, depending of course on what one means by the ‘idea for a film.'” he said. “In one sense it is rooted in Bobby Kennedy Jr.’s powerful book, ‘Crimes Against Nature,’ which documents the accelerating attack on America’s natural resources that took place over the past ten years. From another point of view, it is connected to the passion for the people of Appalachia and their circumstances that has long moved one of my producing partners, Clara Bingham.”
