Thompson on Hollywood

Producer Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder have gone overseas for their new Superman: to Henry Cavill, 27. His name came up some time back as a possible Bond. But he lost the role to another more experienced British actor, the rugged Daniel Craig.

Now Cavill has landed a role for which youth is an asset: Superman, in the Warner Bros./DC ComicsMan of Steel. Cavill has been waiting for this: He was also considered for Batman Begins (against Christian Bale, another Brit), The Green Lantern (against Ryan Reynolds) and more –not to mention he was cast as Superman when McG was in the Captain’s seat. (His casting proves yet again that Hollywood often finds its most masculine leads abroad.)

Now that the role is his, fellow contenders can move on to other pursuits. There are only so many pairs of tights in Hollywood and most of them seem to be filled. THR says Matthew Goode (Watchmen, A Single Man) was next in line for the role, and Winklevi-double-timer and Hoover-lover Armie Hammer was also in the mix.

The role of Lois Lane is the next hot topic. ThePlaylist made the following suggestions last October: Rebecca Hall, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, Emily Blunt, Kate Mara, Elizabeth Banks and a few honorable mentions (we like McAdams).

Cavill has been acting on stage since his boarding school days in Buckingham’s Stowe School, including Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His first film was Laguna with Joe Mantegna, directed by Dennis Berry (a clip below). Later came The Count of Monte Cristo, Tristan & Isolde, Stardust, Whatever Works, The Tudors (which he talks about with a posh British accent below). Both Immortals and The Cold Light of Day are in post. In Tarsem Singh’s Greek-inspired fantasy-action-drama Immortals (November 11), he plays Theseus to Isabel Lucas’s Athena, Michey Rourke’s King Hyperion, Stephen Dorff’s Stavros, John Hurt’s Old Zeus and Frido Pinto’s Phaedra. In Summit’s thriller The Cold Light of Day, Cavill plays an American who uncovers a conspiracy while trying to save his kidnapped family; the film co-stars Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver (no release date). He’s also the face of Dunhill’s Black fragrance (video below). The Clark Kent glasses will have their work cut out for them.

Dean Cain was the best Superman even though he just played him on TV.

Cavill has to pull this off because he already has a lot of draw backs including: British, Height, Size, he better be able to capture the goofiness of Clark Kent and the hunk of Superman. Its like casting an American for James Bond. Nothing Against Cavill’s acting, just not my first choice for the reboot of Superman. Especially since Superman is on the low down of the superhero movies. Batman topping it with Dark KNight. Superman needs a great movie. If Cavill can pull it off good for him but if not he’s got a lot of angry fans to deal with.

Cavill has a good face, but his body needs a lot of work. The body needed to look good in magazines and commercials is entirely different than the body required of Superman. We’ve entered a new age of Superhero actors with Thor, Wolverine, and Captain America. Even Chris Reeve’s old shape would have the fans up in arms these days, as too weak.

When I wrote the press notes for “Whatever Works” I discovered that Cavill has a sizable and passionate online fan base, which surprised me as I had never heard of him. As he had come so close to all those heroic roles, and was so charming in that role, I was actually surprised that it has taken so many years for something big to happen with him, whether super-powered or not.
