Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue Cover Preview: Franco, Hathaway, Reynolds, Gyllenhaal, Barely Wilde

Thompson on Hollywood

Check out Vanity Fair‘s annual Hollywood issue cover by Norman Jean Roy, complete with Robert Duvall, Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway, Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and a bevy of young stars on the rise, most noticeably Jennifer Lawrence, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Olivia Wilde, Anthony Mackie, Mila Kunis, Andrew Garfield, Jesse Eisenberg and Noomi Rapace.

Yes, while Mel Gibson, Mark Wahlberg and Harvey Weinstein are on the inside of the issue which has not yet hit stands, it does NOT include Cari Beauchamp’s survey of the Hollywood trades in digital transition, because she was unwilling to turn it into a cliched smackdown among editrixes Sharon Waxman, Janice Min and Nikki Finke. (I’d like to see her exhaustively reported story show up somewhere else.)

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the cover shoot, as well as a portrait gallery of this year’s Oscar nominees.

Gyllenhaal was very good in Love and Other Drugs and was Oscar-nominated before. I’d ask why Olivia Wilde was there; she’s everywhere but she also hasn’t had a great role yet.

okay…i didn’t read far enough…still…reynolds & gyllenhaal? reynolds is hilarious but has yet to do anything major, and gyllenhaal should be put in the doghouse for “prince of persia.” not happy about the cover. and why didn’t annie photograph it? didn’t someone bail her out financially? saw her exhibit in sydney last month & it kicked ass, btw.

If it’s about Oscar contenders, why are Jake Gyllenhaal & Ryan Reynolds on the cover? Did I not read far enough? If so, oops…
