Emily Browning Says Steamy Scene With Jon Hamm Cut From ‘Sucker Punch’ To Ensure PG-13 Rating

Emily Browning Says Steamy Scene With Jon Hamm Cut From 'Sucker Punch' To Ensure PG-13 Rating

The jury is still out on Zack Snyder‘s “Sucker Punch,” the robots and dragons and girls with guns and swords fantasy pic that opens this Friday. And while it certainly looks unlike anything to hit the big screen — for better or worse — Emily Browning reveals that she’s pissed one sequence in particular got cut to please the MPAA and help secure a PG-13 rating for the film.

In an interview with Nylon (via CinemaBlend) the actress reveals that things get hot and heavy between her character and Jon Hamm. And it made folks rating the film uncomfortable. She explains:

“I had a very tame and mild love scene with Jon Hamm. It was like heavy breathing and making out. It was hardly a sex scene… I think that it’s great for this young girl to actually take control of her own sexuality. Well, the MPAA doesn’t like that. They don’t think a girl should ever be in control of her own sexuality because they’re from the Stone Age. I don’t know what the fuck is going on and I will openly criticize it, happily. So essentially, they got Zack to edit the scene and make it look less like she’s into it. And Zack said he edited it down to the point where it looked like he was taking advantage of her. That’s the only way he could get a PG-13 (rating) and he said, ‘I don’t want to send that message.’ So they cut the scene!”

However, the actress does acknowledge that a PG-13 rating is the only way young girls are going to be able to see the film which is apparently empowering. “I’m torn. I want an ‘R’ (rating) because we can get a lot of cool scenes into it, but then I like the idea of younger girls being able to see it,” she said.

And before those cry out that Snyder’s artistic integrity is being compromised, he probably knew from day one that he had to deliver a PG-13 cut. After “Watchmen” underperformed there was no way Warner Bros. was going to roll the dice on another expensive niche, R-rated movie. Snyder will probably get to put all the blood and boobies he wants in what is likely to be an inevitable unrated director’s cut down the line so everyone can have their Hamm and eat it too.

Emily Browning is amazing in this movie!!! Emily we love you! You’re fantastic! :-D

Mac Mave

Can`t believe that the MPAA cuts such tame scenes, in europe it doesn`t matter – you can see naked girls on the TV the whole day.

This MPAA shouldn’t have them cut the scene. It’s nothing really improper there!! Fortunately we’re going to watch it on dvd

you’re missing the point, NON.
yes, “when not getting raped, the girls are prostitutes under the thumb of a gangster/pimp.”

So don’t you think they should have been given the opportunity to take control of their sexuality? The text is that they’re imprisoned, the subtext that they’re imprisoned as “burlesque prostitutes”, so why no reprieve? No moment where they’re FINALLY in control of their confined sexuality?

Don’t you think in the moment that Jon Hamm says, “It’s like she wanted me to do it, did you see that look on her face?” that it would have held a certain gravity if you would have seen her in the subtextual fantasy taking control of her body and destiny?

What the fuck kind of girl is going to see this who is 12 LOL. And she is 100 percent right nice to see actresses lashing out at the shitty god awful MPAA. their stupid, meaningless, and a dead end to society LOL. no joke. I hope for a cool unrated version. and i know it will be there. I am pumped for this even though every review is bad, and I mean really bad, no remorse. What the fuck were people expecting though you knew from day one it was going to be this so stop your bitchin and go watch something more up you ally and leave the fun brainless art to people who enjoy it.

mouse is absolutely right!!

You’re all missing the big picture here. The takeaway from this article should be that the MPAA was going to give an R rating to a girl being a willing participant and a PG13 rating to the same girl being taken advantage of. That’s sick.

Having seen the flick, I love that Snyder “[didn’t] want to send that message.” There are at least three scenes of the PG-13 equivalent of rape. And when not getting raped, the girls are prostitutes under the thumb of a gangster/pimp. Trust me, that message was received loud and clear.

Also, Jon Hamm is in the movie for all of five minutes.

I didn’t catch a fatal grammar snafu and then that last line. Goodness gracious. If I have to click through an ad when coming from RSS you guys could really up your game.

Snyder’s films are dramatically and cinematically inert. No drama, soul, emotion, nothing. This is a big problem for a man that wants to make Superman.

“Shouldn’t people be worried we’re 2 days from release & there’s STILL an embargo out against reviews from professional critics?”

yes, I believe so.

It will suck either way. Zach Snyder is Michael Bay with an art degree.

Jacques DeMolay

Well, kudos to Snyder for making the right call here. It’s better to cut the whole scene than distort the way it reads to the viewer. Shame on the MPAA!

And shame you for that terrible, awful pun in the last line. Seriously. That shit is inexcusable.
