Gary Oldman Hints 'The Dark Knight Rises' Will Feature Old School Villain

Gary Oldman has been doing the press rounds for “Red Riding Hood” and naturally, he’s been grilled about “The Dark Knight Rises,” but the veteran actor has been playing it cool and not spilling too many details on Christopher Nolan‘s highly anticipated and secretive sequel. What we do know is that Tom Hardy will be playing Bane and Anne Hathaway will be taking on Catwoman, though current rumors suggest she will be an ally instead of a foe. And now Oldman has hinted that another villain in the movie will be ripped from the classic pages of the comics.

Speaking with E!, Oldman said, “I think it’s a villain from one of the old, old, from way back from the old comics.” He contineud, “It is a Batman villian… It’s not going to be the Joker,” adding that if he said anymore “they’d kill me.”

So, who could it be? There are a number of candidates, including Clayface, Blockbuster, Deadshot and Calendar Man (who has ties to Alberto Falcone, son of Carmine Falcone featured in “Batman Begins“), and also folks featured in past films like Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and more. Let the speculation begin and toss it into the pile of rumors that have lately included The League Of Shadows being tipped as the primary villains in the film. But a mix of old and new school villains? We like it and it’s a pretty fun way to mix things up in the Gotham universe.

Production on “The Dark Knight Rises” begins in May and it will hit theaters on July 20, 2012.

mphmmm

God you people are soooo stupid Riddler? How many times do you have to go through with this????

Its likely Leavitt’s character as a villain (Black Mask? or Dr. Ebeneezer Darrk-the first henchman to serve under Ra’s Al Ghul withf the league of shadows in the comics) .

Or he’s referencing Talia Al Ghul. So much for old school..

But if he didn’t mention Bane in that same interview there’s very little to go on that indicates Bane is not the villain he’s talking about. Who knows, we will see…

@rodie

Perhaps, but I think he’s well aware of the Bane/Selina Kyle announcement. That was a big one and it was all over Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

I think we’re all jumping to a conclusions here. I seriously doubt that Oldman is a student of the old comic books, and it is highly likely that he is mistaken or confusing things when he says he *THINKS* its an old villain from an old comic book. When asked that question, he may not have known or remembered that Bane has been announced by WB and Nolan. He’s not an obsessive fanboy like us who checks the internet everyday for new info on TDKR. He could easily be mistaken and think Bane is a much older villain the the early 1990s. Or perhaps Nolan is merely incorporating elements/motives of an older villain like Hugo Strange into his “new interpretation” of Bane as the WB press release said. Oldman’s comments in no way guarantee there is an ADDITIONAL villain to Bane in this movie.

I also believe Joesph Gordon – Levitt is portraying the Riddler .

Phillip

Riddler.

Suuuure, they deny he’s in it, but it’s a ruse! I swear!

tut

Deadshot. Book it.

ben

Could be the Red Hood.

Julian

It was announced that Marion Cotillard was cast for an unknown role. Some forums suggest her to be Talia al Ghul, the daughter of the villain from Batman Begins. It may be possible that Batman will be dealing with the League of Shadows…

Kevin Jagernauth

Nah, just added it. I initially left it out because I plain forgot.

aw

“including the long rumored Hugo Strange,”

naw, kevin mentioned it :D

Klesla

um….pretty sure it’s safe to say it’s not Clayface. Or Blockbuster. Or Killer Croc, or any of those types.

Quality post though, you managed to not mention “Hugo Strange” once
