It is really a pleasure to see something as good as this fit into the genre format(s) so well and artistically.
The narrative line is a rare combination of modern nocturnal LA Noir mixed with a martial arts format.
Jason Yee plays a downcast loser in a seedy business where he chauffeurs pretty young ‘bad girls’ to their paying dates. Of course he falls in love with one of them who winds up brutally murdered early on. The revenge motif clicks in and from then on the film really delivers. I like the way it is shot and played and our tragic lead couple are really beautiful to watch.
Jason Yee is a captivating and charming new presence on the cinema scene who delivers a dead on portrayal of a tragic low level night driver for beautiful ‘on call’ girls and who must track down the thugs who murdered his beloved. Jason’s honesty draws you into his character’s pain and anger which explodes with his impressive fighting skills and make you feel like you’re watching the next big action star in a breakout performance.
Jason is charismatic and intense, but at times charming and attractive, the downtrodden but street-wise driver searching for his lover’s killer. His fascinating performance draws you past the macho tough-guy exterior to the depths of his character’s existential torment which explodes in bloody and artfully conceived action sequences.
I feel Jason has a great future as a serious romantic lead and / or as a sympathetic versatile male star who can punch as well as any of them – if not better!
