Things You Should Do Before You Die: The Wynwood Art Walk in Miami

So for the first 4 nights I was in Miami, I was certain I hated it. Spending the majority of my time in South Beach, I was overwhelmed by aflockalypse of douchebags and slutty hos, and a sense of artificiality that puts the worst parts of Los Angeles to shame. But then on my final night I almost accidentally came across the Wynwood Art Walk, which takes place the second Saturday of every month in what first appears to be a pretty sketchy part of downtown Miami. And it was amazing. Dozens and dozens of art galleries open their doors (and give out free liquor that you can take with you to the streets) to a completely different breed of Miami Folk than the Double-Ds and DBs of South Beach. Amidst huge crowds of queers, hipsters, intellectuals, families, yuppies and fashionistas, there was gourmet food trucks, dance parties, incredible outdoor art displays, interactive art displays, and some serious spirit. It actually reminded me of a Latin-American-tinged version of Montreal’s Nuit Blanche and it was my first glimpse at what was clearly an attractive side of Miami.

Here’s some photos, but they do no justice. So make sure it’s a second Saturday if you’re ever in Miami.
