This past week on indieWIRE included the coverage of two film greats who passed away, New Directors/New Films kicked off with the New York premiere of “Margin Call,” “Potiche” director Francois Ozon dished on working with Catherine Deneuve, and much more.
This week witnessed the loss of two cinematic greats, beloved film actress Elizabeth Taylor and documentary trailblazer Richard Leacock. indieWIRE provided a retrospective of Taylor’s legendary body of work and gathered comments from Leacock’s students and admirers regarding his groundbreaking contributions to the silver screen. Cannes Wish List
The announcement of the Cannes Film Festival lineup is just around the corner. indieWIRE offered its annual Wish List of 40 films they predict and hope make the list. Among the most promising films are “The Descendants,” Alexander Payne’s follow-up to “Sideways,” and “On the Road,” Walter Salle’s attempt to adapt Jack Kerouac’s Beat generation bible.
New Directors/New Films
The New Directors/New Films festival marked its 40th year by opening with the New York premiere of “Margin Call.” Coinciding with the event, indieWIRE looked back at the festival’s history of debuting such definitive films as “The Road Warrior” and “Clerks,” and talked with directors highlighted in this year’s lineup. In addition, indieWIRE released a daily batch of interviews with filmmakers taking part in this year’s event.
Interviews: Ozon and “Weekend” Director
François Ozon, the popular French filmmaker, spoke with indieWIRE about his second Catherine Deneuve collaboration, “Potiche.” “If she wouldn’t have said yes,” Ozon declared, “I wouldn’t have made the film.”
One of the big breakout’s at this year’s SXSW was Andrew Haigh’s “Weekend,” which screened in the out-of-competition Emerging Visions section. indieWIRE caught up with Haigh to profile him for the weekly Futures column, where up-and-comers in the film world are given the spotlight. The Playlist also offered their take on the film.
Reviews: “Mildred Pierce” and “Book of Mormon”
Kate Winslet will grace the small screen starting this Sunday, with HBO’s update of the 1945 Joan Crawford classic, “Mildred Pierce.” Caryn James reviews Todd Haynes’ five-part miniseries and reveals why it is a worthy interpretation of the James M. Cain novel. James also caught a showing of of the hyped Broadway musical, “The Book of Mormon,” from the bad boys behind “South Park,” and offered her ecstatic take on the show.
The musicals creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, chatted with Anne Thompson about rocking Broadway with their button-pushing musical, ‘Book of Mormon,’ which opens tomorrow after a run of successful previews. “We’ve done everything we set out to do,” Stone said to Thompson. “We set out to make a real Broadway musical, a real one, not a spoof of one, not ten minutes of one with a lot of crap.”
In the Works
In indieWIRE’s weekly Production iW is Rooting For column, five films in various stages of production made the cut. Leading the pack is the bowling comedy “Spit,” from writer/director Jamie Buckner. What first started out as a short, starring Keith Powell (“30 Rock”), has since been adapted to a feature length script.

Following the Weinstein Co.’s big night at the Oscars where they nabbed Best Picture for ‘The King’s Speech,’ the company has announced they will soon launch a TV department, a games division and a new PG-13 cut of the royal drama. Anne Thompson dissects what the future holds for one of the biggest players in the game.
