The American Film Institute is honoring Morgan Freeman with their 39th Lifetime Achievement Award. The Gala Benefit on June 9 (airing on TV Land June 26) will host the following committee members to play tribute to Freeman: Ben Affleck, Jim Carrey, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Ashley Judd, Helen Mirren, Mike Nichols, Jack Nicholson, Brad Pitt, Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford, Tim Robbins, Steven Spielberg, Hilary Swank, Denzel Washington and Alfre Woodard.

The event will transform into a ballroom Sony Pictures’s historic Stage 15, where many classics — including The Wizard of Oz— were filmed. Proceeds from the event will go directly to AFI’s educational and preservation programs.

AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale states:

Morgan Freeman has embodied characters that range from prisoner to president, from gumshoe to God,…[he] has collaborated with American film’s finest, and the artists represented on the AFI Benefit Committee are a testament to this man and his extraordinary body of work.” TV Land’s president Larry W. Jones adds, “TV Land is honored to give viewers the chance to witness his extraordinary talent when Hollywood comes together to honor Morgan for his remarkable work in Hollywood and beyond.”

Congratulations, Mr. Morgan Freeman. You certainly deserve it. Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to work with you sometime in my life.

Is this the first time a character actor is getting the award? Why not Ernest Borgnine, for cryin’ out loud? He’s done far more significant films than Freeman. Just look at Borgnine’s filmography: FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, JOHNNY GUITAR, VERA CRUZ, BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, MARTY, THE CATERED AFFAIR, THE VIKINGS, BARABBAS, THE DIRTY DOZEN, THE WILD BUNCH, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, etc.

Congratulations of course, and I think the AFI LIFETIME AWARD must be, also for DORIS DAY and SHIRLEY MAC LAINE, Don´t you think so? Mora than 50 years each one …. Many AFI winners not even close that.
