Ben Affleck Ready To Get Literary As Tom Buchanan In Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'

It was nearly a month ago when Bradley Cooper pitched himself for the role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann‘s “The Great Gatsby” but it looks like the director has somebody else in mind entirely.

Ben Affleck is now in talks for the role according to Deadline, and the actor/director looks like he’ll slot it in before taking on the Tehran hostage picArgo” for his next directing gig. In case you slept through English class, Tom Buchanan is Daisy’s husband, a millionaire cad and racist who cheats on her with Myrtle but who also grows jealous when the titular Gatsby reveals his love for her. So basically, he’s kind of an asshole which would be a change of pace for the actor who is usually in relatable everyman kind of roles.

If it all works out, Affleck would join Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire who are playing Daisy, Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway respectively in the film. Production on “The Great Gatsby” is tentatively set to begin in August in Australia but with Luhrmann’s never-ending process in shaping the film before it rolls, it remains to be seen if that timeline will hold.

I hope Ben Affleck’s acting career is relaunched. He has done some great films in his time and should receive some sort of recognition for his work as an actor. He is an underrated actor. So, I hope that from now on he does more movies, more leading roles, tries to reach his full potential as an actor and tries to win an Oscar.

So what you’re saying Mr. Black is you prefer the Ben Affleck of Reindeer Games and Pearl Harbor to the Ben Affleck of The Town? Exactly how many lead paint and paste sandwiches did you eat as a child or are you still feasting on them?

Mr. Black

So now two unfortunate casting choices for my most anticipated movie of 2012, Tobey and Ben Affleck. I love Baz, but I don’t understand how directors feel it’s a good idea to have them in their movie. I liked Ben before he became a pseudo-intellectual writer/director of mediocre movies. Plz. I’ll take Bradley Cooper over him any day of the week.

I feel he skews too old for Tom. Carey who is perfect for the role skews so much younger. I need to reread the book because all I can do is recite the green light bit from the end.
I would have enjoyed seeing Bradley Cooper though.

So basically he’s reprising his character from Mallrats, just older and in a period setting. This is an awesome idea, seriously.

I think Affleck will do a fine job, though I still would have liked to see Tom Hardy in that role. After watching the trailer for the (admittedly awful looking) MMA movie that stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, I can’t help but think that Edgerton would have been great as Buchanan too. Hmmmm.

Tobey Maguire is a great actor. I hope he can get back to his ‘Pleasantville’, ‘The Ice Storm’, ‘Wonder Boys’ days. ‘Spider-Man’ did him no favors.

I think Affleck is a good actor and will be fine in the film I’m sure, but I hope he doesn’t take his eye off the ball in regards to directing. Nobody mixed mainstream sensibilities with intelligent filmmaking better than he did with The Town last year.

Bradley Cooper is very good, but I’m glad he’s being punished for making ‘Limitless’, which was a really terrible movie.
