FORTISSIMO FILMS ACQUIRES “Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel”
Documentary Tribute to Screen in Presence of Corman in Cannes’ Official Selection ‘Cannes Classics’
Amsterdam/Hong Kong, April 26, 2011: Fortissimo Films has acquired international rights to Alex Stapleton’s CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL which will feature in Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection.
Roger Corman, who celebrated his 85th birthday this month, and his wife producer Julie Corman are scheduled to be present for the tribute screening in the Cannes Classics programme on May 18th.
The documentary is an homage to Corman, a Hollywood legend who was an inspiration for many of today’s most important directors and actors. His filmography includes Five Guns West (1955), Swamp Women (1955), It Conquered the World (1956), Not of This Earth (1957), Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), The Undead (1957), The Wasp Woman (1959), A Bucket of Blood (1959), House of Usher (1960), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), Last Woman on Earth (1960), Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961), The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), The Premature Burial (1962), The Intruder (1962), Tales of Terror (1962), X (1963), The Haunted Palace (1963), The Raven (1963), The Terror (1963), The Masque of the Red Death (1964), The Tomb of Ligeia (1964), The Secret Invasion (1964), The Wild Angels (1966), The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967), The Trip (1967), Bloody Mama (1970), Gas-s-s-s (1971), Von Richthofen and Brown (1971), and Frankenstein Unbound (1990).
Stapleton’s film features extensive interviews with Roger Corman, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, and many others. French music group Air composed the score (the band previously wrote the music to The Virgin Suicides and contributed tracks to Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette). CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL proved to be a surprise hit at the Sundance Film Festival where it was initially unveiled to critical acclaim.
Fortissimo will handle all rights outside of North America. The deal was brokered by Winnie Lau, Fortissimo’s Executive Vice President, Sales and Acquisitions, and producer Stone Douglass of Far Hills Pictures.
On announcing the deal, Lau commented, “Corman’s films are universal classics with worldwide appeal and Alex’s affectionate tribute gives us a unique overview of this legendary director. The film demonstrates that with guts and determination like Roger’s, it’s possible to take on the system and do it your own way.”
Douglass added, “We are thrilled to partner with Fortissimo Films on sharing CORMAN’S WORLD with the international community. Roger is not only a visionary film-maker, but he also embodies what it means to be a true independent and that is a message we believe will resonate with audiences around the globe.”
Synopsis: CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL tracks the triumphant rise of Hollywood’s most prolific writer-director producer, the true “godfather” of independent filmmaking. While known for working fast—some of his films were made in two days—and wallowing in the world of monsters, bad special effects, schlocky acting, and plentiful nudity, Corman is also a respected rebel of cinema. He dealt with hot-button social topics like race and feminism. He created his own production and distribution company, tagging it “America’s Biggest Independent.” And he taught the next generation of film greats, including Scorsese, Demme, Coppola, Cameron, even Ron Howard. From Corman’s first 1955 feature to the set of his new film, DINOSHARK, this entertaining documentary has all the blood and guts of Corman’s lurid and fascinating career, with essential insights from contemporaries and students. Learn the roots of indie filmmaking, laced with boobs and violence!
