FILM MOVEMENT ACQUIRES ACCLAIMED NORWEGIAN THRILLER “KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND”
Opening Night Film of Lincoln Center’s New Films from Norway Series to be Distributed Across North America
April 26th, 2010 (New York, NY) – Film Movement (www.filmmovement.com), the North American film distribution company that brings first-run, award-winning independent and foreign films to fans all across the country, announced today their acquisition of KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND. This Norwegian language film was directed by Marius Holst and features a stunning performance from acting powerhouse Stellan Skarsgard (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Entourage, Angels & Demons) alongside a young cast of primarily non-professional actors. This thrilling tale, based on a true-life turn-of-the-century uprising on a remote Norwegian Island, is a chilling mediation on class, youth and the totalitarian rule of an unchecked state. KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND will enjoy a limited theatrical release in North America, and play on Cable VOD in Q4 2011.
Synopsis of THE KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND:
Based on a notorious uprising at a reform school for boys in 1915 that required military intervention, this island-bound epic is a thrilling study in adolescent rebellion and the rigors of regimentation. At the prison-like institution of Bastoy, the boys endure the rough-handed abuse of the school’s staff, who run the risk of pushing their charges over the edge. When a new inmate leads the boys to a violent uprising against a brutal regime, their strength and perseverance will be put to the test, and they will have to ask themselves how far they will go to attain freedom.
Acclaim for THE KING OF DEVIL’S ISLAND:
Opening Night Film – Film Society of Lincoln Center’s New Films from Norway film series
Official Selection – Rotterdam Int’l Film Festival; Gotenborg Int’l Film Festival; Mostra de Valencia Film Festival
The deal was negotiated between Film Movement’s Rebeca Conget, Vice President of Acquisitions and Distribution, and Agathe Valentin of Les Films du Losange.
“King of Devil’s Island marks the sixth Norwegian film in our catalog in the past eight years, and we couldn’t be more delighted to continue supporting the fresh and diverse cinema from this fertile country. Stellan Skarsgard’s acting in this film is as powerful as ever, but the real treat is the ferociously raw performances by the mostly non-professional teens. We are extremely excited to share this stirring film with our audiences,” says Rebeca Conget, VP of Acquisitions and Distribution.
