Julianne Moore stars as Sarah Palin in HBO’s Game Change, while Ed Harris plays running-mate John McCain, Melissa Farman (Temple Grandin) plays Bristol Palin, Larry Sullivan plays Palin’s deputy chief of staff Chris Edwards and Jamey Sheridan plays McCain’s speechwriter/campaign advisor Mark Salter (complete photo mash-up below, actors in said order on the right).

Shooting on the film begins today, with Jay Roach (Dinner for Schmucks, Meet the Parents, Austin Powers) directing a screenplay from actor-writer Danny Strong (adapted from Mark Halperin’s book). Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are executive producers [THR, THR].

Reviews of Halperin’s book also below. And in case you’re wondering what Sarah Palin’s response was to the White House releasing Obama birth certificate this morning, here you go:

@SarahPalinUSA: Media: admit it, Trump forced the issue. Now, don’t let the WH distract you w/the birth crt from what Bernanke says today. Stay focused, eh?

Among the reviews for Halperin’s book:

“The authors of Game Change succeed in creating a plausible account of the emotional tumult of the 2008 campaign as it might have been—perhaps even was—experienced by the candidates, their spouses, and their staffs.” (Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker)

“An amazing piece of work…One of the best books on politics of any kind I’ve read. For entertainment value, I put it up there with Catch 22…An absolutely gripping read…they can write.” (Clive Crook, The Financial Times)

“Riveting…Its pages brim with scandalous tidbits…This is a must-read for anyone interested in the cutthroat backroom hows and whys of a presidential campaign…And it doesn’t hurt that Game Change reads more bodice-ripper than Beltway.” (Tina Jordan, Entertainment Weekly)

This movie is going to be so good! I loved the book and suggest people to read it before seeing the movie. It's true its basically like two chapters of the whole book…. but the whole thing was great as well. My favorite radio show the book report just did a review and excerpt on the book here. I suggest listening to it because Elaine Charles does such a great job discussing it.

I didn’t realize this is only going to be about Pain/McCain and not all of the other candidates in the book. As a liberal, I am certainly more interested in seeing the Palin/McCain aspects of “Game Change” come to life, but I think a move like this is certainly free game for Republicans to call bullshit on, since a lot of “Game Change” makes Democrats look really bad.

I’m just thinking, if a conservative production company made an adaptation of “Game Change” and just included Obama and the Clintons, I’d be pretty annoyed and I think the Huffington Post and similar outlets would be up in arms.

“Game Change” was written in the spirit of telling the whole story of the 2008 campaign. I realize certain concessions must be made to adapt a book for the small screen, but just showing the Republican campaign feels like a betrayal to the intention of the authors.
