Watch: Jessica Alba Is A Quirky Math Nerd In The Trailer For 'An Invisible Sign'

Quirk alert! This movie has it all! Math, burgeoning love, numbers and patterns everywhere like “A Beautiful Mind” and even a precocious little kid. We don’t know if we can take any more.

A trailer has landed for the Jessica Alba-led romantic comedy “An Invisible Sign.” Directed by Marilyn Agrelo (”Mad Hot Ballroom”), written by Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis (who paired on “The Wedding Planner”) and based on Aimee Bender‘s book “An Invisible Sign of My Own,” the story follows a math teacher, obsessed with numbers, who battles her own compulsive behaviours, guides her students and deals with the deteriorating mental health of her father, a former mathematician. Chris Messina plays the poor man’s Paul Schneider as the love interest while J.K. Simmons has the role of Mr. Jones, Alba’s former high school math teacher.

“An Invisible Sign” is currently available On Demand and will get a limited theatrical bow on May 6th. Trailer and synopsis below.

Young Mona idolizes her father, a brilliant mathematician. When he suddenly demonstrates signs of mental illness, Mona begins to obsess about numbers, using them to interpret an unpredictable and threatening world. Now an adult (Jessica Alba), Mona’s old superstitions and compulsive behaviors continue to flourish, but a new job as an elementary school math teacher (a position she both relishes and dreads), may force her out of her protective shell. With imagination and humor, as well as a special sensitivity to the realities of mental illness, AN INVISIBLE SIGN carries a magic all its own.

What Is The Songs From The Trailer I’ve Looked Far And Wide!

Paul is the better actor. just watch his role in Jesse James. Though small, it’s still tremendous. Plus when i found out he was the brother in Away We Go, it felt like it was the ultimate reveal of a unhyped cameo.

And it’s nice to see a movie/trailer with Alba, not flaunting off her ass and/or stomach. To bad the quirky OCDness is being overplayed by her.

Chris Messina was so much better than Paul in AWAY WE GO!!

Hahahahaha, well played, jesse.

Ryan is right: you can usually tell if someone knows math by looking at them, and this movie’s failure to take that into account is damning.

This movie has been on the shelf for awhile. The Aimee Bender novel it’s based on is terrific, but never seemed especially cinematic/filmable to me. It could definitely come off as cuteesy if not handled correctly. But I’m hoping it at least sort of works.

Did you watch the trailer you posted? J.K. Simmons is not the dad

Feels like an Oxygen Channel TV movie.

That scene reminded me of When harry met sally.

Every actor is the poor man’s Paul Schneider. Why do people hate on Chris Messina? Before I even read this, I knew it was gonna hate on Messina. He was really good in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and he’s fine in everything else.

But yeah, the movie will most likely be a lame fest. Why wouldn’t they cast an actress who looks like she’s opened a math book in her life?
