It’s a weekend of extremes, with the Fast Five testosterone-fest, a Prom tween fantasy, not one but 13 Assassins and a Hoodwinked Too! that no one asked for. Several indie gems are mixed in with some less-inspiring releases: we recommend Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3-D and Clio Bernard’s documentary on playwright Andrea Dunbar, The Arbor, a film that turns the term ‘documentary’ on its head but “once you settle in, [Bernard’s technique] proves enormously effective,” writes ThePlaylist. “Barnard is able to expertly weave the narrative, dropping hints of the darkness early on while never quite giving the game away.”
Reviews, pictures, trailers and details on this weekend’s offerings are below:
Our own Anthony D’Alessandro writes that “gas-strapped Americans are expected to break their piggy banks this weekend to see Universal’s auto five-quel Fast Five, which has scored the first ‘fresh’ reviews of the series.” He tracks the fate of each of the franchise’s installments. Not surprisingly, Fandango reports: “Fast Five, the fifth installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise, is Fandango’s top advance ticket-seller of the year to date, representing 74% of our daily ticket sales,” while Flixster concurs: “The fifth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise went into overdrive this week, surging 279% in overall Flixster search activity. The picture sped past everything else – including Thor, which is still a week out from release and posting search activity and Want-to-See numbers just as impressive as they were last week.”
