The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced Thursday a contest to find the ultimate film fan–and drum up some attention for their new state-of-the-art Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, which is set to open officially to the public on June 17, 2011. Open to film audiences worldwide, the Film Society contest will award the winner with a seat at the center, named after them, a friend or loved one.

Here’s what contestants are being asked to do:

Describe, in one hundred words or less, their ultimate film fan story. The winner will be selected by the staff members of the Film Society, who will judge entries based upon creativity, uniqueness and a demonstrated passion for film. The contest, which closes at midnight on June 14, will announce its winner formally at a Film Society live event on June 24. Entries can be made by going to SeatNaming Contest, with only one entry allowed per person. In addition to text submissions, contestants will also have the option of submitting a short video for consideration.

You can also buy a seat starting at $2,500 and name it for anyone–for life. For more information call The Film Society at 212.875.5615.

I have some great film fan stories, but I couldn’t reduce any of them to 100 words. That’s only seven lines of text in a standard word document. Forget it.

I’d love to name a seat after some great performer from Old Hollywood who’d normally be overlooked in such venues, e.g. Dan Duryea, Gail Russell, Sabu, Lawrence Tierney, Theresa Harris, etc. But $2500 is a lot to spend at a time like this on a luxury like that. And the people who have money to spend like that are gonna name the seats after their egotistical selves or some relative who wouldn’t even care.
