The Spike Jonze-Simon Cahn animated short “Mourir Aupres de Toi” (To Die Next To You) — a stop-motion film entirely handmade from felt — will premiere May 18 in the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, immediately preceding Jonathan Caouette’s new documentary, “Walk Away Renee.”
It’s inspired by Olympia Le-Tan, the French maker of extraordinary handmade clutches that resemble classic, first-edition books in miniature. (The film is set in Paris’ Shakespeare and Co. bookshop; at night, the characters from the books come to life.) “We Have to Talk About Kevin” star Tilda Swinton carried a custom-made “Ant and Bee” Olympia Le-Tan clutch on the red carpet for the film’s premiere. (Oddly enough, “Ant and Bee” was also cited as an inspiration for the upcoming horror anthology “The ABCs of Death,” announced today in Cannes.)
You can see photos of the purse, and of Swinton carrying it, on the Olympia Le-Tan Tumblr.
All of which to say that this seemed like a good time to take another look at the short’s teaser, shot by Cahn, that made the rounds earlier this year.
