Watch - Salli Richardson-Whitfield Channels Lena Horne (Diversions)

A video clip from the 2011 Jenesse Silver Rose Auction and Gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel, benefiting the domestic violence oriented Jenesse Center, which Halle Berry has been a long-time supporter of. As part of the evenings festivities, which took place last month, actresses Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Taraji Henson and Wendy Raquel Robinson (above at the event) each separately channeled iconic black female performers.

In the clip below, Salli Richardson-Whitfield (whom I’m told will be directing another episode – her second effort – of the SyFy series Eureka, which she also stars in, as 1 of so very few black women directing episodic television series) “summons” the inimitable Lena Horne:

This is for Salli Richardson Whitfield.
When you were in high school at U of C, I met you as a friend of Siobhan and Barry Faldner.
My sons, Tony and Josh, also in high school were mad over you. Since then, I have kept an eye on your career. My most memorable sighting was in I Am Legend. You are still gorgeous and the video I saw of you singing Stormy Weather, was brilliant. Tony is now 45 and Josh is 42. Each has a daughter. I am now 71 (can't believe it).
Congratulations to you for all you have accomplished and how happy you must be to have what
appears to be a lovely and functional family. Bless you all.

That was beautiful. I had no idea Salli could sing like that.

Wow! Love her. I’ve been a fan of hers.
Didn’t know she could sing either.

Glad to hear that she’s directing another episode.
And yes, she definitely should do Lena.

Cordell Martin

Well I hope she gets cast as Lena Horne in a future film.

So beautiful. Talented. “Eureka” is a fun show. And I agree Lynn, cast this woman as Lena!

I didn’t know she could sing that.

If there is going to be a movie in the works about the life of Lena Horne Salli Richardson-Whitfield should play her.
