Repeating his decision last year to get started early on the Governors Awards and Oscarcast, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak has turned to Academy Governor and writer-director Phil Robinson (Field of Dreams, The Sum of All Fears) to produce the 3rd Annual Governors Awards this November 12. The producer team Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare of Don Mischer Productions will back up Robinson. The Academy now gives out its coveted Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award and Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award among other honorary awards that night at the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood and Highland. This year the honorees will be picked at an Academy board meeting in late August.
The Governors Awards dinner is a hot ticket; it’s a fun, intimate non-televised affair designed to take pressure off the Oscar show. The Academy posts video online.
Since 2007 Robinson, who was nominated for writing Field of Dreams, has chaired the Academy’s International Outreach Committee and has led member delegations to Vietnam and Iran. Oscar show consultants Haykel and Hare most recently exec produced Oscar arrivals show “Oscars Red Carpet Live.”
Last year Francis Ford Coppola accepted the Thalberg Award, which is a Thalberg bust. Honorary Oscar statuettes went to Kevin Brownlow, Jean-Luc Godard and Eli Wallach.
