Allen Hughes/Mark Wahlberg Black List Project "Broken City" Moving Ahead w/ $60 Mill Budget

There’s this other thing, ‘Broken City,’ that I want to do at the end of next year with Allen Hughes directing, which is on the Black List. It’s one of the best unproduced screenplays, an amazing piece of material that should attract amazing talent.

Those are words from Mark Wahlberg, spoken last year, while promoting The Fighter. We missed that… but thanks to The Playlist, now we know.

Fast-forward to today, as Deadline reports that the project “has now been set up to be financed by Emmett/Furla Films at a $60 million budget.

Nice chunk of change for Mr Allen Hughes to play with.

So, what’s Broken City about? It’s described as “a noir-style drama about an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor to see if his wife is cheating on him. When the mayor’s wife’s cheating partner ends up dead, the private eye immerses himself in the mayor’s business and uncovers a real estate scandal that involves dealing himself choice city-owned properties.

No word on when we can expect this; but it’s good to see Allen Hughes is still very much in play, after exiting the Akira project earlier this year.

Agree with Jug. It’s noire all-up-and-in-through-this-piece. That’s what noire is, right?

If some call it similar to Chinatown. How about Devil in a Blue Dress? (investigator gets all tied up in the business and life of the one who hired him/her, que resultye en a clusterf*ck of noireesque proportion that ultimately works itself out.

With all that said (established), I’m interested. I’m there. Can’t wait. :)

James Madison

I’m always curious about the Hughe’s doings.

I’ll stay tuned.

It’s not a rip of CHINATOWN. Go watch THE MALTESE FALCON, THE BIG SLEEP, THE THIN MAN or read any Raymond Chandler type novel. This genre was re-invigorated by CHINATOWN, so it’s not a rip but right in line with the genre.

It’s like saying SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is a rip of PLATOON.

Rip-Off aside, this is a HUGE improvement over the ill-fated Akira project, so I’m very happy for Allen Hughes and I hope this turns out great.

they’re so ripping off “Chinatown.”

Sounds similar to CHINATOWN.
