American Black Film Festival 2011 Preview - "Shanghai Hotel"

The Shanghai Hotel will make it’s world premiere at the American Black Film Festival (July 6-9) this year. The film, directed by Jerry Allen Davis, deals with the issue of trafficking women as sex slaves.

The cast includes Eugenia Yuan, Hill Harper, Pei-pei Chang, Peter Green, Ron Yuan, JD Williams, Yaya DaCosta, Sharif Gordon and Wayne Chang.

A description of the story states…The Shanghai Hotel is the story of a young woman named Yin Yin (Eugenia Yuan), who illegally buys her way to the USA from communist China hoping to make a better life for herself and her family. After a long, treacherous journey stowed away in a the dark hull of an overcrowded cargo ship, Yin Yin arrives in New York City for what she thinks will be the beginning of a better life. Falsely promised a job in the technology industry, her dreams are shattered when she is told by the Snakeheads, an Asian gang, that her debt is much higher than expected. To pay off that additional debt she will have to work it off by being a prostitute. Yin Yin is devastated by the news that she is being sold into the sex slave trade. The rundown, decrepit building that Yin Yin and the other prostitutes live and work in is known as the Shanghai Hotel. Women from Thailand, Korea and China all reside in the Shanghai Hotel.

Saw it at the festival and loved it! So good to see a positive Black man in a film. I hope everyone gets a chance to see this. Acting, camera and story were excellent!

Yeah, I know. Total “wishful” thinking. < >

Well, from the looks of it, James, you may not get your wish in this flick.

I always liked Hill Harper’s work in small films. A shame he has been wasting away on CSI:NY. But I would guess the movie offfers haven’t been coming his way much.

I was hoping for more of a presence from Yaya Dacasta. < >
