Anna Karenina Update: Joe Wright Casts Knightley, Law, MacFadyen, Macdonald, Ronan, Johnson

Thompson on Hollywood

The impressive cast of Joe Wright’s upcoming adaptation of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (adapted by Tom Stoppard) is as follows: Keira Knightley (Anna), Jude Law (her husband, Karenin), Matthew MacFadyen (Oblonsky), Kelly Macdonald (his wife, Dolly), Olivia Williams (Countess Vronskaya, Vronsky’s mother), Saoirse Ronan (Kitty, Dolly’s sister), Aaron Johnson (Anna’s lover, Vronsky), Andrea Riseborough (Princess Betsy) and Domhnall Gleeson (Levin).

The Working Title film will kick off production this September in the UK and Russia. Wright is currently seeking siblings to play the many children in the film.

Working Title co-chief Tim Bevan says the story, about a woman who has an affair with a younger man while trapped in her dull marriage, has remained a classic “because people relate to it; it has “incredible relevance today.”

Here’s more on Working Title’s slate of projects in our interview with WT co-head Eric Fellner.

Is anyone else tired of Kiera Knightly being the face of all of their favorite strong female roles? I didn't not really like her Elizabeth Bennet.

what? i thought jude law is goig to play oblonsky(the playboy/uber nice brother of anna). jude law as karenin is so not right. i mean, karenin is 20 years anna’s senior. so not right.

Hold on – Anna leaves Jude Law for Aaron Johnson? What is she, a chicken hawk?

Also, I think I’d rather see either MacDonald or Riseborough as Anna – one feels more confidence in their ability to convey some soul.

Apparently you have to be British to play a Russian.

Stellar cast, especially the re-teaming of Joe Wright with Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen!
