Blood (Really) and Tears: Late Night’s Weiner Attacks

Jon Stewart can’t win when it comes to the Anthony Weiner story, which last night literally drew blood.

From the start, Stewart has walked a tricky line, admitting that the Congressman is a friend yet making his share of Weiner puns and letting the audience see how horrible he felt about the whole mess. Last night’s Daily Show started unusually, not with Stewart at his desk, but at a podium, giving a Weiner-like apology for his own mistake: for not calling out Weiner as a pants-on-fire liar the night before (the Weiner press conference happened just an hour before the show taped).

It was a shrewd move for Stewart to mock himself for being easy on Weiner. And as he was absurdly mixing a frozen strawberry Margarita on the podium – because who wouldn’t need a drink while dealing with this story? – he broke a glass and cut his hand and wrist so badly he was bleeding throughout the rest of the sketch.

The show briefly stopped taping after the sketch, and Stewart returned with the cut bandaged. Jon Stewart’s wrist: one more victim of the Weiner sext scandal.

Here’s the mock apology and the real injury. Conan O’Brien’s goofier response to the problem: the “Penis Disguise Kit” that Weiner should have had. And Jimmy Fallon – well I hate puns, so I’m sorry to say his mock-apology as Weiner is just one long pun about his staff, but take a look at all three.
