Happy Canada Day: My Top Five Canuck Films

Peter Knegt ain’t the only Canuck working at indieWIRE. Unlike my colleague, I’ll be Stateside this Canada Day. So in honor of my country’s birthday check out my top five Canadian films OF ALL TIME (in no specific order). Feel free to shoot me your picks in the comment section below!

“The Decline of the American Empire”
Why? Sex, laughs and more sex from Denys Arcand. What’s not to love?

“Away From Her”
Why? It stars Julie Christie in one of her best performances (and that’s saying something) and it broke my heart in a sweet and effortless way.

“eXistenZ”
Why? This was the first David Cronenberg pic I saw and my first impression still stings. Provoking, unsettling, disgusting, and sexy as hell. What Canada’s master of weird is all about.

“Exotica”
Why? My favorite of Atom Egoyan’s films is a sexy thriller made with such class and artistry it takes the breath away.

“Kissed”
Why? When will the U.S. discover Molly Parker? This woman’s been churning out stellar performance after stellar performance up North. Her best one to date’s in “Kissed.”
