Sergio spoke of “Mandingo”.

Didn’t studios follow-up with “Drum”??? I’ve never seen it. I’ll have to see if I can find it somewhere…

“Mandingo” offered up many “layers” if you will, of what took place on both sides. But the subject is so wide and expansive and deep that the film (and the book to a certain extent) could only cover so much. But cover a good amount, it did.

If you can wrap and package tough issues into neat, fancy, shiny packages for the masses then yes, more films about race and whatever ‘taboo’ subject you want to explore, then those films would definitely make it to mainstream and be successful. But that’s the rub, right? Not all can squeeze into that ‘echelon’ of feature films. So yeah, market to niche audiences in various formats? Yes, sure. However, I’m down the with wide-releases, small-releases, medium-releases… Are cinephiles specific to one type? or all types of film? LOL :P

Cadillac Records/Talk to Me: a matter of no ‘brand-name’ or popular person association? Ray = Ray Charles. Dreamgirls = The Supremes on Broadway! that Jonny Cash movie = Jonny Cash! The rest fall by the way side…but then that movie about The Runaways wasn’t very impactfull box-office-wise…and they had a built-in ‘cult’ fanbase…

I don’t know who Luke Cage is…but I’m willing to learn ‘coz I wasn’t familiar with the Green Hornet, with the Fantastic Four, with most of those XMen. I know the big kahunas: batman, superman, wonder woman, etc. but was never familiar with the complete family of Marvel, DC and/or Dark Horse and/or those other comics, etc. I love action and I love superhero-ism and I would be down with seeing this film, too.


Did you not watch the special features? There’s one deleted scene with Bill Paxton and the old lady. The old lady is holding the locket and she’s about to drop it over the side of the ship. Bill’s trying to talk her back down. It is so hilarious. So glad they didn’t use it.

Also, Billy Zane’s eyebrows were the TRUE STAR of Titanic. :P

Re: A Star is Born…Leo has played this role. This will be a cakewalk for Leo. The rub here is exactly what Sergio pointed out, it falls to Beyonce. Does she have the depth, the gravitas, and alla dat to do something that isn’t surface level? I see her in every role she’s done. Two exceptions: that dinner table scene in Dreamgirls and the little bit of Etta I saw in Cadillac Records before my dvd skipped over her parts. I always SEE HER and not the character. And yeah, Monique, she has the “work ethic”…….but so do other actresses #shade LOL

Wow, That got a little heated! I agree with Foreign Black Women on Sergio’s point about black women being upset with Will Smith kissing Charlize Theron. Studio Heads don’t give a damn about any black women’s feelings. The only films that are marketed toward us are Tyler Perry and the occasional Just Wright/Something New.

And are we really going to take Beyonce’s take on racism seriously? The girl is as dumb as a box of rocks and I don’t think she’s even aware of the privileges she has.


Thanks for the continuation of the IR discussion. I would have preferred not to hear the sudden angry outburst at the beginning, but with the baiting comments from ‘Sergio’, I guess it was expected.

What ‘Sergio’ conveniently fails to mention is that Will Smith’s movies will be seen by more white males than black females, and the movie producers know this. So whatever goes on in Hancock, Sydney Poitier films and all other films where black men and white women have a lack of intimacy, is because of the moviegoing majority… which is not black women but another demographic.

Same thing with the prevalence or double standard of bw/wm pairings and their plotlines that was being talked about last week. The demographic for most of these movies is not Black People let alone Black Women.

These movies are controlled by white studios. Blaming american black women may be trendy but it doesn’t hold in this case, since we are talking about HOLLYWOOD.

However let’s not inject too much logic into this for the sake of our own enjoyment and victimisation :)
