It’s not as if the MTV Movie Awards are real awards, not the Oscar kind that can change careers. That trophy isn’t shaped like a bucket of popcorn for nothing. But the show (live on MTV on Sunday night), is a comic spectacle. Its movie parodies are a highlight, and it’s a lot more fun to watch than pseudo-serious sham awards like The People’s Choice. The success of this show is in inverse proportion to its sincerity.
And there’s virtually no sincerity built into a list of categories like Best Kiss (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson or Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis?), Best Fight or Best Jaw Dropping Moment (probably the only time Jackass 3D will compete for an award with Black Swan; or compete for an award all). Among other MTV-friendly stars, Jesse Eisenberg is scheduled to be there. His Best Line From a Movie nominee: “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you’d have invented Facebook.” I wouldn’t bet against that one.
This year’s host, SNL‘s Jason Sudeikis, is not an obvious choice. I’m a fan of Sudeikis, who has been underused on SNL this past season, but who is he when he’s not a sketch character? Here he is in a series of promos that have him introducing himself to nominees. The promos are uneven. Kristin Stewart’s is flat, Emma Stone’s is terrific, but then Stone is great at comedy and Stewart looks grim even when she’s smiling. Take a look.
