SyFy Sets Premiere Date For "Age Of The Dragons" (Danny Glover As Capt. Ahab) + New Trailer

The Syfy Channel has finally settled on a premiere date for Age Of The Dragons, a film I’ve highlighted on this site previously. It’s essentially a re-imagining of Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, starring, in an unexpected, if inspired casting choice, Danny Glover as the tyrannical Ahab. Vinnie Jones and Sean Astin also co-star.

Syfy acquired stateside rights to a film in April, as noted in my last post on the film, which has already been released on DVD in the UK, though it hasn’t been screened in the USA. But those of you who have cable TV will be able to watch it when it makes its stateside premiere on the Syfy channel on Saturday, July 30, at 9PM (ET/PT).

The full synopsis for this action/fantasy/sci-fi/thriller, reads: “Set in a mythical realm where Captain Ahab and crew hunt dragons for the vitriol that powers their world, Ishmael, a charismatic harpooner joins their quest. Ahab’s adopted daughter Rachel, beautiful and tough, runs the hunting vessel. Ahab’s obsession is to seek revenge on a great “White Dragon” that slaughtered his family when he was young and left his body scarred and mauled, drives the crew deeper into the heart of darkness. In the White Dragon’s lair Ahab’s secrets are revealed and Rachel must choose between following him on his dark quest or escaping to a new life with Ishmael.

Those of you in the UK, anyone see it yet? If so, thoughts? I’m curious.

A newer trailer than those I’ve shared previously follows below; though, as I’m guessing, a new one, recut for/by Syfy, will turn up eventually; and from the looks of it, it does feel very much like a Syfy Channel film, doesn’t it?:

Why do you say Sean Astin is in this movie??? His name isn’t listed in IMDB, he’s not in the trailer or in the trailer’s credits.

That’s a funny picture.

Actually seeing the photo makes me think of the IR discussion on the recent S&A podcast in which someone, when trying to point out that there are multiple examples of pairings of black men and white women, brought up Danny Glover’s short stint role on the ABC series “Brothers and Sisters” in which his character dated Sally Field’s character. Seriously why would someone equate the love life of two senior citizens on a TV series with the IR that occurs in films? The topic was NEVER TV; it was simply movies. But just as I predicted an honest conversation could not be had on the subject.

Anywa back to topic….is Glover allowed to survive in this flick? That would go against Sy Fy’s cardinal rule to kill all black guys (with precious exceptions). I’ll probably never know because (shockingly) I won’t be watching.
