Civil Rights Documentary "Freedom Riders" Earns 3 Emmy Nominations

Missing from yesterday’s post on the Emmys were the nods to documentary films, specifically that Firelight Media’s gripping two-hour documentary Freedom Riders was nominated in three categories.

Freedom Riders focuses on a 1961 civil rights effort that led more than 400 black and white Americans to risk their lives – with many enduring savage beatings and imprisonment – for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South.

The film, which was well-received on the film festival circuit and subsequently aired on PBS’ American Experience, garnered Emmy nominations for Outstanding Picture Editing For Nonfiction Programming, Exceptional Merit In Nonfiction Filmmaking, and Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming.

Freedom Riders is directed by Stanely Nelson, produced by Laurens Grant, and edited by Lewis Erskine and Aljernon Tunsil.

I’d better first say something about the documentary, okay, I liked it.

Dankwa, I went by your spot. First, it’s always good to see a brotha with a mustache and goatee, then I know what I’m working with, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, my man, you got something nice over there. I see you like the old John Grisham… my wife did too. And man, I thought I was the only brotha that liked Corrine Bailey Rae. I mean, that’s probably not special but mixed with the others you liked, ie, Musiq Soulchild and Lyfe Jennings, I knew you were my type of guy. But check this, I stayed at your spot for a while, and I have to say one thang is stuck in my mind.. That damn Bedroom Intruder thang. Dankwa, was that some funny, ignorant, silly mess or what? I mean, it’s a shame a brotha gets on “the top” by being a damn fool, but hey, life is crazy.

Oh, but Dankwa, Inception… the best picture? We have to talk :-)

And Alica is way cool but best single? We have to talk :-)

Great news.

It irritated me when ABC World News did a brief piece on this documentary and only focused on a portion about a white male freedom rider and nobody else. Really ABC? Really?
