Coming Soon: The African Hulu

Something to watch for, when/if it fully materializes. Although you’ll find a few channels already online where you can find similar product via video portals like YouTube, or standalone sites like AfricanFilmLibrary.com.

Frustrated by the difficulty of accessing quality African content abroad, a group of Ghanaian entrepreneurs have teamed up to launch a service they’ve dubbed the African Hulu. ReelAfrican.com, a new streaming video service now beta-testing ahead of a planned fall launch, will offer original African films and series using a model similar to Hulu’s. Content will be free for all viewers, with revenue initially generated by selling a 10-second advertising spot for every 8-10 minutes of content. The site’s target audience… is the large number of Africans living outside the continent with no reliable way to watch movies and series from home. The site’s founders have invested close to $20,000 building infrastructure.

You can currently watch Nigerian/Ghanaian movies @ http://www.naijapals.com for free. And I bet they spent more than $20K to get started.

I can’t wait, hopefully all of Ousmane Sembene’s films will be available to stream.

Nevermind. Finally popped up after a few minutes – but need the www first.

Cool! I hope they have subtitles.

The link for the African Film Library doesn’t do anything even when you add the www. I don’t guess it’s out of commission.
