How Do They Continue To Get Work... And Other Things That Make You Go Hmm (Survey)

I have my hands in a bunch of things today, so I’m a little tied up, and you know what that usually means… that’s right, it’s survey time! :)

While at the American Black Film Festival, I got into a conversation that centered on why/how certain actors whom we all agreed aren’t very talented continue to get job after job, some in high-profile films. But it wasn’t all criticism; we also talked about actors we felt should be working a hell of a lot more than they currently are. And I’m not just talking about black actors by the way. Actors of every skin color.

So, while I’m taking care of some other business, I’m throwing both questions out to you all to answer. Fill in the blanks…

First, how in the world does ________________________ continue to get work so damn easily and frequently; Second, it’s an absolute travesty that ___________________________ isn’t working as much as he/she really should be.

Again, even though our focus is primarily on talent of African descent, I’m considering actors of all groups; not just black folks. We talk about black actors enough anyway.

Go!

Isaiah Washington never was anything more than a C list, one note actor before he ruined his career all by himself. That’s why he’s not working.

@Mark – re M. Night:

Q: What do the following directors have in common?

Andy Wachowski
Bryan Singer
David Lean
Francis Ford Coppola
Joel Coen
John Woo
Martin Scorsese
Mel Brooks
Michael Mann
Norman Jewison
Oliver Stone
Quentin Tarantino
Robert Redford
Spike Lee
Stanley Kubrick
Tyler Perry
Woody Allen

A: They each have made LESS MONEY at the box office over the course of their careers than M. Night. (source: the-numbers.com)

THAT is why he gets to keep making movies. Because he makes money for the studios.

I used to ask this question often then I had a realization on the answer.

Its pretty simple actually…Having just come back from the ABFF, you should agree with me on this:

Some people just really know how to work a room.

That’s it. I think it all comes down to “liking” a particular actor as a person (not just an actor) if you’re a producer, director or financier. There are quite a few actors I’ve met personally over the years through my editing work. While I may not think the are the “best” actors (remaining nameless), I can see why they keep getting the call, they’re REALLY nice people (at least they acted like they were). It makes you remember them later. I’ve personally witnessed a producer say “I want to find a way to put ________ in this. How can we make that happen?”

Some of the “better” actors (remaining nameless), many of them come off unapproachable, standoffish or pretentious in public settings like networking events. I’ve heard some horror stories about some people I really like as actors. Sad part is, they don’t even know they’re doing it, its just a part of who they are.
