When the Republicans used a clip from Ben Affleck’s heist movie The Town to urge Tea Party colleagues to back John Boehner’s debt-ceiling plan, the ploy was widely considered — insane? ridiculous? the lame-brained idea of someone who never goes to movies? All of the above, but Jon Stewart deconstructs the episode best, pointing out why comparing the Tea Party to Jeremy Renner’s loose-cannon killer character was not exactly flattering, and why Sen. Chuck Schumer will never host a movie-review show.
Affleck, who has campaigned for Al Gore, John Kerry and President Obama, said in a statement, “I don’t know if this is a compliment or the ultimate repudiation,” and had some perfect skewering advice for the Republicans: “If they’re going to be watching movies, I think The Company Men” (about the struggles of laid-off white-collar executives) “is more appropriate.”
But is the comparison so wacky after all? Affleck’s character in The Town, who asks Renner’s to follow him, no questions asked, does say, “We’re gonna hurt some people.” Yes, they are.
