When commentator Mark Halperin called President Obama a dick on Morning Joe – he quickly apologized on the show and was almost as quickly suspended by MSNBC – the incident caused a flap that Jon Stewart typically got to the heart of. Issues of journalistic decorum? Forget it; as Stewart says, that horse left a barn a long time ago.
He did notice how odd it was that Morning Joe regular Willie Geist was on camera next to Halperin during the apology. Stewart deconstructs Geist’s disapproving look and goes beyond that. With cameos by Anthony Weiner, Bill Clinton and others, this little spot becomes a shrewd satire of what sometimes seems like our apology-driven political culture.
If Stewart is our best media critic, Rush Limbaugh is the worst. Limbaugh posed a ludicrous canard, wondering, “If Mark Halperin had said this about say, George W. Bush, would they be falling all over themselves to apologize?” The answer is yes, of course they would, if he had said it while Bush was president.
Here’s Stewart’s smart but light-hearted response, imagining a world of all-apologies all-the-time with Willie Geist.
