Producers Guild Sticks with Ten Picture Nominees

Marking a break with the Motion Picture Academy, the Producers Guild of America is sticking with ten nominees for its 2012 Darryl F. Zanuck award for outstanding feature film producer of the year. The 23rd PGA nominations will be announced on January 3 and the Awards show will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Beverly Hilton, and will be chaired by Paula Wagner and produced by Michael Manheim. The PGA also added some TV categories covering reality television, sports, news, children’s programming and web series.

The Academy has changed its Oscar nominations voting to a system that will yield between five and ten best picture candidates, depending on how many number one votes are tabulated for any given film (5% are required). The PGA followed the Academy’s lead when it expanded from five to ten nominees; clearly this was a popular movie among its members. The PGA nominations and wins often reflect Academy sentiment, but could be less of a bellwether now. Winners tend to hew close to the Oscars: The Hurt Locker and The King’s Speech both won the top prize at the PGA and the Oscars.
