With its American users still reeling over Netflix price hikes, Variety reports that the entertainment delivery service already has its eye on Europe.
European film distributors, speaking on condition of anonymity, have told Variety that Netflix has confirmed its plans to open for business in Spain and the UK by the first quarter of 2012.
Netflix’s VP communications, Steve Swayse, would not comment on the report. “For our expansion plans, we’ve said that we plan to be in Latin America by the end of the year,” he said. “Beyond that I can’t say any more.”
That Latin American and Carribbean expansion is expected to contain more than 40 countries.
As of its April 25 letter to shareholders, Netflix reached nearly 24 million customers worldwide.
The company made a major push into Canada that began in 2010 and now has 800,000 subscribers. However, the expansion has faced complications unique to the nation.
Wrote CEO Reed Hastings, “We are still learning the seasonality curve and nuances specific to Canada.” They must also contend with data caps that can lead to what Hastings termed “outrageously high overage charges of $1 more per gigabyte.”
