Sony Picture Classics has preemptively acquired the domestic rights to Darling Companion from Minneapolis-based Werc Werk Works (Howl, Life During Wartime).

The $5-million film stars Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline, who is reuniting with Big Chill writer-director Lawrence Kasdan on this comedy drama about an empty nest couple’s collapsing marriage: “The story of a woman who loves her dog more than her husband. And then her husband loses the dog.”

Written by Lawrence and Meg Kasdan, the film is produced by Anthony Bregman, and also stars Dianne Wiest, Mark Duplass, Ayelet Zurer, Sam Shepard, Richard Jenkins, and Elizabeth Moss.

Kasdan admits in my recent interview with him that the cast got “paid nothing.” SPC has not yet announced a 2012 release date.
