Weekend B.O. (July 22-24) And A Question...

Captain America: The First Avenger was No.1 this weekend beating out Harry Potter which is still making big money. So far all the HP films together have made a toal of $7 billion which is why Warner Bros is desperately looking for another tent-pole movie series to replace it with no luck yet.

But one big surprise had been the box office success of Bad Teacher which, despite getting dreadful reviews and being held up for critic screenings until the very last moment, has made almost $100 million so far.

The film co-starred Justin Timberlake who also stars in the No. 3 film this weekend Friends With Benefits. I don’t see it. First he was in some boy band and now he’s one of the hottest actors working today. How did this happen? I’ve always thought and still do that just he’s another bland white guy. So tepid he makes vanilla ice cream taste spicy. He even makes Bradley Cooper charismatic by comparison and I thought NO ONE could do that! .

What’s the deal with him? Am I missing something here?

1. Captain America 3D (Marvel/Disney/Paramount) Weekend $65.8M
2. Harry Potter/Deathly Hallows Pt 2 3D Weekend $48M, Cume $274.1M
3. Friends With Benefits (Screen Gems/Sony) Weekend $18.5M
4. Transformers 3 3D (Paramount) Weekend $12M, Cume $325.7M
5. Horrible Bosses (New Line/Warner Bros) Weekend $11.5M, Cume $82.2M
6. Zookeeper (MGM/Sony) Weekend $8.7M, Cume $59.2M
7. Cars 2 3D (Disney) Weekend $6.5M, Cume $177.2M
8. Winnie The Pooh (Disney) Weekend $5.5M, Cume $18M
9. Bad Teacher (Sony) Weekend $2.5M, Cume $94.3M
10. Midnight In Paris (Sony Classics) Weekend $2M, Cume $45M

Does ‘bland’ happen when you do too many ‘romantic comedies’?
@ careycarey’s “will smith of white boys” comment….i agree

Justin yet has the appeal he had while in N’Sync. As someone mentioned those fans still love, long and yearn for N’Sync and Justin. And as long as Justin keeps with the crazy (and successfully funny) skits on SNL *and* his constant rejection of returning to music anytime soon (the fans want him to so badly), he will continue to be a mainstream success.

Someone mentioned the more dramatic features he’s done; the smaller roles. I think bit by bit he’s built his ‘actor’-self to the point where he can now ‘act’-out in comedy and do so successfully. He had a few misses (Edison, Love Guru), but he’s hit with those indie features. I thought his performance in Black Snake Moan as surprisingly good. But the man-child with the boy-face and eyes that cry ‘river’ won’t have too hard a time maintaining his “fan-fave”ness.

Nothing about this feature (Friends With Benefits) appeals to me, but I don’t think I’m its viewer target. On the flip, I will most likely watch Bad Teacher on cable, eventually.

@ Josh, agreed. He did an awesome job. I so thought he was gonna die at any minute but they let him live and gave him a lot to do as well as a saving moment too! Can’t say the same for the horrible X-Men First Class which everyone felt was a better film but dogged out the black characters. SMDH.

Michael Shandrick

He can act.

“As much as I love the S&A website, I’m trusting it—we—won’t fall into some kind of white-bashing site” .

Say it girl, you took the words right out of my mouth.

Aside from bashing white folks, I’ve noticed a trend of blaming white folks for all our ills. I once was called a white man (in one comment) because I was trying to give a view that was counter to “the man did it”. Justin Timberland is NOT bland. He may be white but never bland.

Geez, some of the recent comments have the feel of reverse racism… “who cares about the white jew” … ” That white women who wrote The Help is” …

And, Malcolm said it best:

“I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it’s for or against”

“You’re not supposed to be so blind with patriotism [for your race] that you can’t face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who says it”

And one for the road… “If you have no critics you’ll likely have no success”

Loved Derek Luke’s performance in Captain America. It made up for the horrible portrayal of us in Miracle at St. Anna.

As much as I love the S&A website, I’m trusting it — we — won’t fall into some kind of white-bashing site. That’s why I grew kinda concerned when I read the “just he’s another bland white guy” statement. I considered it wrong on several levels: (1) His race doesn’t matter. (2) Timberlake indeed has a bit more going for him in the talent department; he’s got potential, and even shows signs of having some genuine talent. I’m just saying…

I would’nt call him bland at all.Justin is probably one of the best SNL guest hosts in awhile. He can be good with the right material.

Why must we call white people bland? I digress…I like Justin Timberlake. He’s a funny dorky guy in real life who from time to time resembles sexy. Plus I grew up an NSYNC and Justin Timberlake fan.

Bad Teacher just looks funny to me. If he wasn’t in it I’d still want to watch it.

Friends with Benefits: the few scenes I’ve seen made my laugh. Plus I like Mila Kunis.

The Social Network: I enjoyed the dialogue and I thought Andrew Garfield was great in it I think and I like Jesse Eisenberg.

But it is funny that Timberlake is a movie star but he’s made smart choices. Let’s not forget that he’s been acting for some time now with roles in Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, Southland Tales, Edison, etc. So it may seem that he has come out of nowhere he has paid his due. This is just his moment. ALl of his movies are coming out at the same time. Similar to Rose Byrne.

I agree with the poster who says he’s like a Will Smith. Basically an every man. A blank canvas. A lot of actresses are that way too. Mia Wasikowska, Kristin Stewart to name a few. Enough for people to see themselves in the girls.

Unique and specific actors make for unrelatable actors. At least on a general scale.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one thinking this.

I’ve been saying the same thing. So, J.T. has decided to take a sabbatical from music — and then when he’s tired of movies he’ll be able to whisk his way back into music…..the mediocrity of the industry frightens me.
Forget talent, let’s go with popularity!
Soooo tired of it.

Frank Stallion

Uh Oh,

Do you guys think Ryan Gosling is in danger of becoming bland (if he’s not already)?

I do.

I have an idea… it’s the roles he has chosen , his international appeal (some blacks love his music & style) which goes perfect with his non-threatening look. He is the white man’s version of Will Smith. Like Will, Timber boy does not rub up against a man’s tough guy image and protected ego. So, when he’s put in roles such as “Friends With Benefits” and “Bad Teacher” they are perfect dates flick and all the teenage kids (white, black or all shades of yellow) come a running. And the marketing for those movies have been perfect, not to mention the appeal of the supporting cast.

In many ways, minus the “Christian” messages and a few writing changes, Timberlake is appearing in movies that have the same appeal as Tyler Perry’s films. The producers/directors are giving the audience what they want, and forget the critics and film snobs. Sex, mess, and friends with benefits sell. They are universal themes that everyone can relate to. Who hasn’t been in a messy relationship or two or three? I know many people have had friends with benefits (we call them fk buddies). And sex… break it down to the ground, give me all you got… is the oldest profession that always has people begging for more.

Don’t forget Tobey Maguire! blaaaand. I think JT is the least blandest of many of them however.

By bland, do you mean, devoid of personality and lacking any apparent inner life. Justin Timberlake is just famous is all and loves doing black music parodies. He might be bland but he does put himself out there and enjoys trying new things and is unafraid to make a fool out of himself. But in truth, I don’t get it either. Only that he can apparently fill a movie theater.

It might help to make a list of who you think are examples of white actors who aren’t bland at all.

Here’s mine:

Robert Deniro
Jack Nicholson
Gabriel Byrne
Marlon Brando
Christopher Walken
River Phoenix

The last thirty years or so seems to have been focused on really picking out cookie-cutter type actors. It might have to do something with the training more recent actors or even actors turned musicians are getting. Maybe trained actors can chime in about this.

I would say hands down, the biggest hope for the non-bland white guy in film we had was only with us on this planet for a short while and that was the super talented Heath Ledger. Interesting, an Australian. Perhaps bland has become an American thing. Where are all the working class types in Hollywood?
You raise a good point, Sergio.

Sergio, a lot of the people who grew up with him (NSYNC) are of age and still fans.

As much as I hate his persona, I can’t deny that he produced a damn good solo album.

A lot of them don’t give a crap about his douche behavior (will NEVER forget how he threw Janet J. under the bus after the Superbowl), and The Lonely Island work is also very amusing.

I can’t get past his whiny voice and try-hard in-authenticity, but whatever.

I would hope that Anthony Mackie or John Cho would gain leading man legitimacy (far more deserving) before (yet another bland white dude) JT does, but I know Hollywood. :-/

To answer your question Sergio, I dunno. I’m confuzzled myself but if I could take a stab at it, I guess Hollywood loves a bland white guy?? *shrugs*

In total agreement with you Sergio. Total agreement!

Bland is the new Black. Every actor coming up now or for the past 8 years has been charisma challenged. Josh Lucas, Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck, et al. Audiences have accepted bland actors because that’s all Hollywood offers.
